Same-sex Parents on NY Birth Certificates

A lawsuit by a married lesbian couple about to be parents has resulted in a change in New York’s birth certificate policies.

New York state officials will now let married same-sex couples list both their names on their children’s birth certificates.

The decision, which echoes similar provisions in states that allow gay marriages or civil unions, is one of many changes that has occured since May, when New York’s governor, David Paterson, ordered state agencies respect out-of-state same-sex marriages.
