America’s First Four-Star Woman

Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody has become the first female four-star general in the history of the U.S. Army

She will command Army Material Command, responsible for equipping, arming and outfitting soldiers.

“There is no one more surprised than I,” she said of her promotion at a ceremony yesterday

Dunwoody will command 133,000 personnel around the globe. Her 33-year career has come as something as surprise. The general originally enlisted for a two-year stint. She had planned to be a P.E. teacher.

Go figure.
