I heard a lot of terms bantered about in the news last week that I didn’t entirely understand. One of them was “Log Cabin Republican,” which I thought was a description, like “Yellow Dog Democrat“. Log Cabin Republicans is an organization of Republicans, who by their mission statement, support fairness, freedom, and equality for gay and lesbian Americans. The name references Abraham Lincoln, our nation’s first Republican president, who was committed to equality.
Here’s a report, out of Minneappolis, on gay involvement at the Republican National Convention.
The organization started in California in the late 1970s, in opposition to the “Briggs Initative,” a California ballot initiative that would have prevented gays from teaching in California’s public schools.
You can find the organization’s website here.
